My take on the Hemingway short story, "The Battler" from the collection, In Our Time, published in 1925.
Young Nick Adams has just been sucker-punched off a train. As he walks through the dark to the next town, he comes across a man sitting by a fire. The man claims to be an ex boxing champion, and is initially friendly towards Nick. But how long will this last?
The Battler is an encounter between the inexperience of youth and the hard bitterness of the lived life.
